Rubella (German measles) Skin Condition : What Is It ? Treatment and
Advice For Patient
Rubella, caused by a rubivirus, is a common viral illness in children. It
is spread by inhalation of infected droplets.
Approximate age group
Childhood.
Presentation
After an incubation period of 14−21 days, a macular rash begins on the face
and neck. It spreads down the body in 24−48 hours then clears from the face
downwards in 2−3 days. It is associated with enlarged occipital and
posterior cervical lymph nodes and, occasionally, an arthritis. The child is infectious from 1 week before symptoms appear and up to 4 days
after rash appears
Treatment
If the diagnosis is suspected, rubella antibody titres should be measured
immediately and after 10 days so that diagnosis can be confirmed. Treatment
is symptomatic as affected children get better spontaneously. Paracetamol
elixir will ease pain.
Advice to parent/carer
Adequate fluid intake to avoid dehydration.
Traffic light
Pregnant women are at risk, particularly in the first trimester
